In 2023, across Western Australia and South Australia more than 1000 members of our union took united strike action, refusing to let state borders divide them in their fight for fair treatment. Their solidarity won a 13.12 wage rise over three years, more secure jobs, and forced an investigation into management conduct.
Around 1,000 Inghams workers in South Australia and Western Australia showed the power of cross-state solidarity when they launched a union delegate-driven strike that brought the company to heel. Workers refused to be divided and South Australian members stood firm, refusing to return until their Western Australian comrades got an equal deal.
Despite company intimidation tactics – including leaving rotting chicken near the picket line, our member’s strength prevailed. They secured a 13.12% wage increase over three years with full back pay and brought more labour-hire roles in-house. The company even agreed to an external audit investigating management’s treatment of worker!
We are pushed to the point that our bodies hurt all day long, where we cant look after our families because were in so much pain. Its not the way it should be in Australia. We need better conditions, and we need to stand together to make it happen. Michelle, Inghams Delegate, South Australia
