In 2019, our members won a major case forcing the Western Australian government to pay an estimated $80 million in unpaid long service leave to casual public sector workers, finally delivering justice after years of systematic denial of entitlements.
When the Western Australian government recognised casual public sector workers’ right to long service leave in 2019, United Workers Union moved quickly to secure these entitlements in enterprise agreements. But despite the formal recognition, government departments continued refusing to pay, forcing our union to take the fight to the Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission.
Through strategic legal action, our members won a ruling that compelled the government to honor its obligations to casual workers. The landmark victory, worth an estimated $80 million across the public sector, delivers justice to thousands of casual workers who had been systematically denied their legal entitlements despite years of loyal service.
