In 2024, cleaners and security guards who were members of our union at QIC shopping centres across four jurisdictions won a 6 pay premium and income protection insurance through coordinated action. Their cross-state unity cracked open better conditions in the notoriously tough retail property sector.
After years watching conditions deteriorate under dodgy contractors, cleaners and security guards who were members of our union across QIC shopping centres decided enough was enough. Led by staunch union members like Rosalie, a cleaning delegate at Logan Hyperdome, workers-built unity across Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT to demand their share.
Their coordinated campaign forced shopping centre giant QIC to guarantee both a 6% award premium and income protection insurance for contracted workers. By linking up across states and job roles, these workers proved that even in the cut-throat world of retail property services, united workers can win big.
“I encouraged all the workers that we join together to work as a team and get more members in order to meet our goal in winning this fight with the new EBA, which will be good for the cleaners.” – Rosalie, United Workers Union member and QIC shopping centre cleaner
