Since 2020, our union has helped build democratic climate solutions through Cooperative Power while joining broad coalitions like Renew Australia for All to fight for just transition policies that put workers first.
Our union has taken a leading role in building democratic, worker-controlled solutions to the climate crisis. As a founding member of Cooperative Power, the union helped create a democratic energy cooperative that directs profits to renewable energy projects. In just three years, Cooperative Power has grown from 53 to over 4,000 members, demonstrating workers’ appetite for democratic climate solutions.
The union has also joined the Renew Australia for All campaign in 2024, a coalition of 65 organisations advocating for increased federal funding for a just transition. Through this coalition, United Workers Union is fighting for policies like electrification of low-income homes while advancing its call for universal Disaster & Emergency Services Leave. This work shows how unions can build broad coalitions to win climate justice policies that protect workers and communities.
